The Thai Army was vigilant on Monday fearing that the country’s longest wooden Mon (Bestanusorn) bridge could collapse as rain continues in the country’s Kanchanaburi province.

Located in the Sangla Buri District of Kanchanaburi, Mon Bridge is a popular tourist attraction for Thais and foreigners.

Commander of the 29th Infantry Regiment, based in Kanchanaburi, Colonel Sarathvuth Chaisith, told the media that the bridge was collapsed due to the strong currents in the Sangkalia River and ordered his army to remain vigilant. Construction, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Thai Army is using motor boats, troops and volunteers to remove debris, mostly tree trunks and logs that are swept away from the forest and limit the flow of water under the bridge.

“Water pressure rises and causes the wooden bridge to collapse. This was in the event of a collapse in the middle of the bridge on July 28, 2013,” said Colonel Saratwooth.

The Colonel said heavy rains had been raging for more than two weeks in the Tannasserim mountain range, which borders Myanmar, sending swelling flows into the Sangkalia and Ranty rivers.
He said his forces were on standby to help the ethnic people of Ban Sanafang and Ban Ko Satoeng in Tamban Livo in the Sangla Buri District, which are most prone to flooding
